hello everybody. maybe somebody could help me. i'm a DOS baby....and yes, i use windows everyday. but i must admit with XP comming out i think that microsoft has really crossed the line. my friend down the street told me about this magical linux thing. i did a couple searches and found some texts on how to send fake email to people and such things. sure, thats fun and all but there's gotta be more to unix than that.
i have an old 450MB hard drive sitting around and i was wondering if i could put unix on that to learn about it so maybe one day i could separate myself from microsoft completely. stop laughing at me |

for sure you can install linux an that disc ... you can have a working installation on a floppy-disc
But on 450MB you just can install the core-system without graphics, tools, online-documentation and so on ... So I would recommend that you look to get at least 4GB free and by one of these complete distributions for the first time ( e.g. RedHat or Suse ) ... they have a lot of things on the cds ... suse has good books included (don't know if redhat too )... and they have a quite good installtion-routine which does nearly everything on its one And with 4-5 GB you should be able to install nearly everything included staroffice (which is included in Suse also) to test and play around |

i got mandrake 7.1 at the mall for 4.95. it came with an installation manual and a reference manual. the reference manual is really sweet..it shows you all the basic commands and things like that. now im usuing linux and i have no idea what im doing. i had to dual boot with windows cause it wouldent see my modem.
i think you can download free copies of linux/unix off the internet...but unless you have broadband i wouldent suggest it...plus you dont get the manuals or documentation or anything like that. i suggest you just go to the store and get a distrobution. like i said, i got mine for 5 bucks. its worth it. |
