Advantages of Groups

What are the advantages of putting users into groups? I understand that in a corporate environment, you should create a group for each department. ie: putting finance employees into a finance group.

But are there any system advantages for doing that? How would it make it easier on the system administrator?

Just curious...

Lightbulb .........

that's really a question for the dummie section, sorry. never heard something about security? When you are not in the group of administrators you may not change systemparameters. i'm in the EDP-group, you are in the SALES-group, i could set permissions to my files, so that only my group can read my documents and the SALES group may do nothing.....

yes that's right

more than that, when you have more number of users under each dept. it is always better to have separate group. so that we can easily give permissions for the files, services etc.,. i think its just for maintenance purpose and nothing much concerned about security.

If you didn't have different groups, would you just want to put everyone in the same group as the system administrator? Probably not since that would give all users the same access to system administration tools. There is your tye in to security - your own peace of mind.
