square brackets

I would like to substitute a phrase which contains square brackets.

change [JOURNAL] TO [journal]

how?

depends on the utility you are useing.

but either way you will be useing a regular expression and you will have to escape the brackets.

One possibility: sed 's/\[[A-Z]*\]/\[replacement-string\]/g'

But this is ksh and you don't say what you're using. Feel free to search the forums as well ... there's plenty of examples and different ways to do this.
