Question Why cd ./ instead cd only?

Hi,
Somebody Knows why i have to execute $ cd ./<directory> instead only $ cd <directory>.

I get the error :

$ cd <directory>
sh: <directory>: not found.

else

$ cd ./<directory>
$

$ echo $PATH
.:/usr/local/bin

Thanks

I can think of a few circumstances where that would be the case.

In ksh, you could have CDPATH set. In that case, ksh will search along CDPATH if you do "cd somedir". But if you do "cd ./somedir", ksh looks in the current directory.

Also in ksh, cd has, for example, a -L option. So if name your directory "-L", you will need "cd ./-L" to get there.
