The best place to start is the linux SOUND hardware FAQ:

http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO/Sound-HOWTO

On this page, you can easily discover more about supported sound cards, chips and other sound advice

Aparently i had similar problems with a sounblaster 128 using Ensoniq's chipset....what i did was to swap my soundcard with a soundblaster 128 which used the Creative ES1373 chipset...the Es1371 chip might work as well...

This might not be a possible solution but i just wanted to let u know
Cheers
