2) what basic business application do they tend to use unix for?

1) Sun and HP seem to be the more common commercial flavors but there are many other unices out there. Typical is relative to business need.
2) All kinds - We use HP and run a complete billing system - batch processes, real time, gui's etc.
3) Call the vendor and pay mucho dollars for it! Or, for your own need/learning, get a free version of a differant distribution such as RedHat, Mandrake, Sun (they offer the binaries), Debian, etc
4)Hit the Search button (upper right side of page), and check out the FAQ page. These are some of the more common questions asked and answered on the board.

These are extremely broad topics...

1) really depends on what they can afford... Small companies may only have 1 server and it could be anything from home grown Linux to HP/SUN/Redhat Linux....

2) Unix can support any application that is designed to run on it, no matter what software that is. I work for a MAJOR telecomm company and we use every Business related application that you can imagine... from billing to setting up new accounts, to company financial data,, to tracking customer data, to managing switches and telephone traffic....

3) All major brands of unix are available from the Vendor... you can buy over the counter Linux at any bookstore.... Also, you can find software on Amazon and on EBAY as well as any other auction website...

4) there are TONS of sites for reference... Books you will actually have to go and buy...

Just let me say that there are many great resources on this site... just search for books, newbie guides, Also look in the FAQ guide.
