printer/filter setup

trying to get my laserjet to print under FC5. Got APSFILTER; what to answer to question 'parallel or serial printer port when it is USB? Do I need
an updated filter software? I tried 'parallel', get 'permission denied when I
try lp or lpr command- thanks- Marshall

what os, printer model, etc. details.

Running FC6 o.s. (dual boot- printer works o.k. in win XP)
Samsung ML-1710 laserjet printer (B&W)
usb connection printer to computer. printer is being used directly
online with desktop computer (Dell Dimension 9100/intel 686).
Doing set-up as root in /usr/local/apsfilter directory

possibly fouled up lp or lpc files by changing permissions a day earlier
following suggestions in a linux reference text- did not think that permissions would cause a problem, and indeed it may be that the
apsfilter software does not know how to handle a usb connection as output port-the ref. book was published 1999- but don't know when the
aps-491.tgz file was written. If 4/91, that may be my problem; I may need
a ref. to similar function magic filter of younger age. Appreciate your
willingness to help- Marshall
