Question UNIX flavors

Are there any flavors of UNIX which are better suited for implementation in the field of 3d animation, if so what are they?

Almost all the unix variants are compatible and suits for the 3D rendering and 3D Animation. All depends on the user how to make use of it. You may try one of it depends on your H/Ware requirement.

amd k6-2

I am planning to convert my PC to unix. It is an amd k6-2 450Mhz with 196 MB of pc-100 ram and an old matrox AGP graphics card(a millenium 200 or 400 I think). Any suggestions on which version of unix to use. I am leaning towards Linux because my main computer is a Mac and I can upgrade to OSX which I think contains a copy of Linux. I don't want to start off with the Mac because I don't really know what I am doing in unix I have never used it and don't want to screw up my Mac.
