Cannot Conect To X Server

Im having problems starting the gui for freebsd 6. To my knowledge I have installed and configured X11, Xorg, and kde. After I log in as root, I can type in startx, or startkde and I get the error message : CANNOT CONNECT TO X SERVER.
I even checked the /root/xorg.conf.new and ran it to make sure that i could get the grey screen with the mouse pointer.
What can I try??
(Please bear with me I am a complete noob and this is my first time installing freebsd I tried to follow the full instructions from http://www.freebsd.org to the T )
