vim create backup file when editing

Hello,

Great Forum and thanks to all for your support.

I am trying to find out if vim can create a auto backup file sort of like emacs does when editing a file.

e.g.

Code:
vi
file and backup file~
The backup file has a tilde at the tail confirming that a copy has been generated.

Hello Sir,

I was super excited from your reply. However I do not have that file on all 3 of the systems I checked. RHEL4, MACOSX and UBUNTU. I have tried to create this file and add:

Code:
:set backup

However when I edit a file there is no backup created. Please Advise in this matter.

Jaysunn

Very sorry, I found that is it working. Please disregard.
