I am learning UNIX and

I am wondering, is there a core book or instruction DVD that I can learn from and be functional in UNIX with. I know a lot of the basic commands and I just figured out how to create a file but, I want to be able to handle this with no problem.

It's helpful to have a goal of what you want to be able to achieve.

Some typical areas..

(a) understand adminstration of a host

(b) being comfortable writing shell scripts

(c) configuring applications/solutions.

(d) writing new/custom applications/solutions.

Does that mean installing an application ?
Customizing an installed application ? something like that ...

Could you please elaborate on that ?

( I should be knowing this definitely and only the usage of terms should be different )

Most applications need to be installed then configured/customised (eg any mail transport agent). I'm just trying to get an idea what this chap thinks he wants to be able to do.
