Diff b/n kill and kill -9

Hi,

I have a process with say pid x. What is the difference b/n

kill x and kill -9 x in unix

     2. The sig argument is the value specified by the -s option,
        the  -signal_name  option,  or the -signal_number option,
        or, if none of these options is specified, by SIGTERM.
and also

Code:
sys/iso/signal_iso.h:#define    SIGKILL 9       /* kill (cannot be caught or ignored) */
says it all.

Also signal numbers are not portable.
