Need something new to play with
I posted this question in the dummies forums, but I would like to get a more expert opinion... I am looking for a new OS to play with. I have a celron 450 running slackware linux, a powermac G4 450 running Mac OS X (Which by the way has 81 days of uptime as of this moment), a PowerBook G3 running Linux PPC, and an AMD 1.4GHZ running win2k. What I'm looking for is something Unix based, but a little different for a Duron 950 system I'm putting together out of spare bits and pieces. Any and all ideas are appreciated, but I'm thinking something other than linux or BSD. What if any advantage does Solaris have? I'm istalling Solaris 8 this weekend to have a look see... What else can ya'll think of that you've tried, or want to try? Thanks in advance for any suggestions

I agree, BeOS sounds like something interesting to try if you're looking for a new OS to play with.
BTW... is an 81 day uptime something special on MacOS?  Just curious... I've known many unix boxes that haven't been rebooted in 5+ years. My own Solaris box would have been up for 3 years straight already if I didn't move earlier this spring.  |

Well BeOS would have been a cool thing to try, if not for the fact that I actually used to have a BeBox... Also, as far as the 81 days of uptime goes it is a little special to a mac guy which I have always been. Used to be the longest you could stay up was maybe a week. It's nice to see the finese of the mac interface on top of a true modern operating system. I suppose I should also mention my system was up for 8 months before I moved into this apartment. So that would put me at almost a year on Mac.

You can check out QNX RTOS (http://get.qnx.com), or AtheOS (http://www.atheos.cx). There are literally dozens of cool OSs out there to play with, although many are a work in progress. Another one I've been wanting to try, but don't have the time or hardware to play with is Plan9, from our friends at Bell Labs (http://www.cs.bell-labs.com/plan9dist/). Too bad their mascott is an ugly little rodent...

Plan 9 looks really cool. When I get finished with finals this week I think I'll give that a shot and see what there is to see. Thanks alot for the tip
