One of your filesystems is full. Check which one it is and clear some space.

What do you mean step by step? Find which filesystem is 100% full using your version of df. Find what files are present in that filesystem, determine which ones you do not need, take a backup of those files on tape (if needed) and then delete them. What else?

1/42 is the root filesystem on SCO systems. If this file system is full you will have difficulty logging on, and may end up damaging the terminal control database.
Look for full log files, email that has never been read in /usr/spool/mail
