Need to know all benefits\differences for V890 over V880.

We are really keen to know about this.

Can anybody please take out some time and get us the information.

I have been investigating the differences between a V880 and V890 as we currently have a V880 and want to get a DR box of similar spec.

As far as I can see the main difference is the fact the V890 can use the UltraSparc IV+ processors. This is a good thing as the IV+'s are multicored processors (as far as I can tell) which allow for a higher performance for a given number of processors over the V880.

Again from what I can tell the backplane is the same.

The only reason why I would push for a V890 is the potential for the awesome dualcore processors and having a much more powerful platform. Given that Solaris 10 is all pushing zones and containers this may be beneficial.

The difference between an 880 and an 890 is the fact that the 890 uses SPARC IV dual core CPUs, these can be either 'plain' IV or IV+. There is a speed increase with the IV and IV+ cpus in addition to the fact that they are dual core. Effectively this means that an 890 has > twice the compute power or an equivalently populated 880. Additionally is is possible to get a RoHS confroming 890 whereas you cannot get an 880 which conforms to the standard.

Q: does RoHS conformance add to the price - I would assume so. I'm in the US so we don't have anything like that codified.

Actually the same terms as RoHS are being enforced in some states, despite that RoHS is a EU directive, also in certain countries in Asia and in Australia.

All new Sun hardware sold since June of this year is RoHS, or has received a partial exemption to allow time for suitable alternatives to be found. For example Sun was unable to comply with some aspects of the lead free part of the directive on certain chips in time. Now that being said Sun may still be selling old stock of non-RoHS hardware at a reduced price to markets where this is allowed, but the intention is to not have two supply chains.
