Recursive mkdir on remote FTP system

How can I perform a recursive mkdir (like `mkdir -p`) but on a remote FTP system? `ftp`'s mkdir command fails when it has to create nested directories if more than the last one doesn't exist.

e.g. "mkdir backup/www" fails if /backup doesn't exist, but succeeds if it does.

you might want to try using Perl or Python's ftp modules for better FTP control.
