mysqladmin error

Hi all,

I am facing the following error:

onc5# ./mysqladmin variable
./mysqladmin: unable to show variables; error: ''

Some more info:
---------------
1. OS is HP-UX.
2. mysqld is starting(/sbin/init.d/mysqld start) and stopping(/sbin/init.d/mysqld stop) successfully.

Any pointers would be highly appreciated.

Just a guess, but that seems rather severe, like a corrupted installation.
