Linux installation OpenSUSE 11.0/Fedora 10
Just wondering if anyway could could help me out. I've got a Dell Dimension box with a PCI graphics card (like gefore 4000 or so).
My problem is I want to install Linux on this machine. I've tried installing Fedora 10, 2 times and repairing one of those installs. The problem with the Fedora 10 installation is nothing with the install, graphics boot fine, can use keyboard and mouse without any problems at all. But when I go to log into Fedora 10 after the installation the USB Keyboard/Mouse freeze, just stop working roughly 2-3 seconds after I enter the password. Tried changing from Gnome to KDE and no difference. No matter what I did the USB hung after I logged into the system. OK I thought I was using Fedora to check out it's new wireless bridge/router feature so I thought I will go back to OpenSUSE as I prefer SUSE (Personal preference was taught Linux on SUSE). OK so OpenSUSE 11.0, once again the initial install works OK without any faults, installs all the packages than it goes through the boot up sequence before continuing with the installation, going to configure the users/network etc I assume. It all appears to be going fine until the following show on the boot status (?) screen. System Boot Control: The system has been: Set up Skipped Feature: boot.cycle System boot control: Running /etc/init.d/boot.local: done It just just hangs there until I force the reboot. So if I force a reboot select boot standard install of Linux it will freeze where is did before. So now I hard reboot the system again and select Failsafe boot (yes I am keeping in mind the installation has not yet completely installed/configured, but thought I am be able to do some type of system check or something. But it now freezes with the Starting syslog services: done I am sure the box is working fine, I was using it for a Windows box to test Windows 2008 server and XP for work and had no problems at all. Has anyone got any idea's why Linux hate this box? One thing I am going to try while waiting for replies is just in case it is the graphics card playing with the system is disable the 3rd party graphics card and install using onboard card which I guess could help the SUSE problem. Interested though to know why Fedora throws the USB devices out after I log in though. Thanks in advanced for any help. |

Just an update...
I've tried installing OpenSUSE after disabling the PCI graphics card from the BIOS and installed fine from the integrated graphics card, though when it was booting it was like the integrated graphics card was not supported at all and sat at a black screen with a '_' in the top left corner of the screen and didn't do a thing. Then thought I would active and swap to the PCI graphics card and now it hangs on boot at Loading CPUFreq modules (CPUFreq not supported) Starting HAL Daemon: I'm running a Intel P4 2.4Ghz CPU and when checking the system requirements it states it should be supported... ....... I've worked out I have to change boot with 'CPUFREQ=no' in to avoid this warning. But I've looked and cant find where to change this. Does anybody know where I would set this? .............. OK another update... Couldn't find where to change the CPUFreq so installed Fedora again (yeah I can near do these 2 distro installations in my sleep now). Found a old PS2 keybaord and a adopter for the USB mouse to go to PS2. I can log into Fedora and use it now YAY... now I got to work out this USB thing...lolLast edited by woofie; 12-14-2008 at 07:05 AM.. Reason: Updating information... again |
