It's Me Again,

I must confess. I was an HP Unix Admin 4.5 years ago, but haven't seen nor touch anything Unix in that time. Well I am back in grad school and working with a prof. doing some Unix Administration for his class, so I am more than a little rusty...and I am working on Solaris Unix, which doesn't seem to be that different, but.... Here is my questions:

I would like to ftp from home ever now and again to transfer files, but I can't remember what files to change to allow my home box access. How do I do that?

Could use a good "beginner's book" if you know of any. I have gotten at least 3 books from the library and they were usually more advanced and the "Dummie" series was to elementary. Do you know of any?

I am using Putty to login, but Putty doesn't allow file transfers..I don't think?

Help!

if your account is a new one (not root) ftp should work out of the box. you can transfer files via scp (uses the sshd) with a windows programm like "winscp".
if you would like root access for ftp you have to edit "/etc/ftpd/ftpusers" and remark "root" or delete "root" from the file. in earlier versions of solaris (before 9, afair) the file was in "/etc/ftpusers".

Greetings DukeNuke2,

Unfortunately, I am not getting to the login prompt. I open a command window from
my MS box and attempt the following commands from the c: prompt:

ftp
ftp>open
To IP Address
> ftp: connect :Unknown error number
ftp>

It times out; I don't even get to the login prompt.

Thanks.

I can't ping the address. It timed out. It sent 4 packets and 4 were lost.
