I just use a standard serial AT modem, which was lying around from a no longer used PC. Solaris will as you surmised use AT commands, so you don't actually need to know anything about the hardware, other than that it is connected to a serical port.
If you wnted to be sure that you are seeing the modem, you could connect it and use tip to manually send a few at commands to make sure the modem responds correctly. |
