have you entered the dns configuration? if not, check the files
/etc/nsswitch.conf
and
/etc/resolv.conf

this is very basic troubleshooting:
1/ can you ping anything/ own addresss, default router
Ask yourself what does it mean if you can/can't.
2/ does your machine learns anything over ARP ?

3/ can you sniff anything on the wire?
