More precisely:
Solaris 10 for SPARC, update 5, "Wad of Stuff", build #10.

A wad of stuff is an entire solaris distribution made up of all of the different "stuff" eg. admin, install, desktop etc... which are each developed as "consolidations" when collected together they form the "wad" or complete distribution.

Hey, where's my wad?

All of our Solaris boxes have "wos" except for one:
Code:
> cat /etc/release
                           Solaris 9 s9_58shwpl3 SPARC
Copyright 2002 Sun Microsystems, Inc. All Rights Reserved.
Use is subject to license terms.
                             Assembled 15 April 2002

We have several other Solaris 9 boxes that have "wos" in the release file, this is the only oddball. What's the deal here? I'm guessing that hw is probably hardware and pl is patch level. But where's the wad? Other hardware releases have a wad. Example: Solaris 8 2/04 s28s_hw4wos_05a SPARC

So is this some non-standard release?

It may or may not be. SHWP versions of Solaris were shipped with Netra machines up until a few years back. I can't remember the full details but I do recall it being the "hardware oem" version of Solaris I believe it means "Solaris hardware program" and that it disappeared as a separate version when it was merged back sometime during the early updates of Solaris 9.
