Sun Server and Solaris 7 Inquiry

Greetings!

Will be firing up the good ole pizza box, soon. Does anyone know if Solaris 7 is still okay to use? Last time I attempted was 2006.

Thank you in advance,

ControlTomato

It's rather old but should be okay. Why would you want to use it though when you can download Solaris 10 or 11?

There are still boxes running 2.51, 5.6, 5.8, etc so 5.7 should be fine if you think you need to run it.

I am super green with Unix & Linux and trying to broaden my horizons.

It's a Sun Sparc Server 20.

Depends on what you mean with "okay to use". It might still boot, these boxes were rock solid, but performance will be disappointing. Most current software won't compile and even less run. Unless you plan to show it in a museum, don't have too high expectations. An SS20 is an antique...

That's a rule I live by..... always keep low expectations. Smilie

Other than firing the box up, the only thing I would like to do is learn Unix. Figure out how to navigate a machine without "point and click".

You can do that with current OSes with quieter hardware…

Note also that an SS20 was a graphic workstation so if you have a monitor attached, there is a graphic "point and click" environment out of the box (choice of OpenLook or Motif.)

Yeah, like Solaris 11 in virtual box. no additional hardware needed.

I would venture to say that if you want to learn Unix/Linux what you would learn from a system/OS this old would have to be relearned when you try to adapted that knowledge to newer versions of HW/OS. So you're better off just learning the new stuff first.
