Boot Solaris 10 U1 for x86 from DVD

Is it possible to boot an existing Solaris 10 update 1 from boot dvd that I run on p3(1 ghz -512 mb ram).

I have got a dual boot sys - the other os is win xp that I need to reinstall but that removes the mbr so, is there any way to recover mbr after the installation of xp?

Thanks.

It depends which bootloader you are using. Is it grub?

If so, you can download a copy of the SuperGrub DVD (free) which can reinstate grub for you.

If you're not using Grub, what bootloader is it?

@hicksd8 I'm afraid SuperGrub does not support Solaris and Solaris 10 doesn't support Grub 2.

@vectrum Solaris 10 uses its own version of Grub. You should be able to reinstall it from your Solaris installation media with the installgrub command, something like:
Code:
 /sbin/installgrub /boot/grub/stage1 /boot/grub/stage2 /dev/rdsk/c0t0d0s0

You probably need to adjust the device name and might also need the "-m" option to overwrite the MBR.

It is recommended to install first Windows then Solaris as the latter will detect the former during its installation and add an entry in the boot menu.
