Could not logon to newly installed Solaris 11.2

Dear Solaris 11 experts,

I can not logon to a newly installed Solaris 5.11 11.2 i86pc i386 i86pc just downloaded today, despite having entered username and password to be created. However, I cannot get on to this workstation after Solaris installation completion. Can you advice how to reset my password?

I am trying to re-install Solaris from same disk but it no longer accept the same configured proxy information supplied from initial setup. The last thing I want is to go through the full installation all over again.

Your advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks a million,

George

How are you trying to login?

Immediately after installation you can only login with the user/passwd that you gave during installation (NOT root which is configured as a role, not a user).

You should be able to login with the userid and passwd given during the install routine. Can you login with those?

One possible reason might be the login window expecting a US keyboard while you are using a non US one.

This happens if your password contains characters typed with different keys on your native keyboard than the on a US one.

Try typing your password in the username field just to check if it is properly entered and to figure out what actual keys are needed.

Able to logon after re-installation of Solaris 11

Thanks to both of your suggestions Smilie,

I ended up re-installing Solaris 11 on a new disk and was able to logon using the password set during setup.

Solaris 11 security is quite different to 10, especially on role compared to user.

Anyway, this issue has been resolved.

Thanks again,

George

It's true that root being a role by default is different to Solaris 10, however, it's easy enough to change root back to a user if you want to:

Code:
# rolemod -K type=normal root

or to change it back again if you want to:

Code:
# usermod -K type=role root

If you want it like Solaris 10 you can have it like Solaris 10.

Remember to set your root password if you do.

Hope that helps.

Beware that switching root to a role vs a user was done for a reason and you are defeating it by switching back to the old way, making your system less secure and less auditable.
