It is simply a text file.

Create and edit it using your favorite text editor.

Don't worry we all have to start somewhere.

One of the things about modern releases of *nix is that they have become much more "mass audience" oriented and as a result most of these type of detail are no longer required in order to get up and running. Most new users these days will never have to worry about what's in there xinitrc, whereas in the past you needed to edit it to get anything more than a X root window :-)

I made the .xinitrc file, but i couldnt save it in my /home directory. I saved the file in my user home directory however.
/export/home/user/

When i log on, it doesnt start xpde

IN the .xinitrc file i put the line:
/usr/share/xpde/bin/startxpde

You misunderstood the meaning of home directory. Your user home directory is /home/user (echo $HOME)

If you're using dt(graphical) login it won't ever launch.

Try logging in on the command line and typing xinit.
