Did you i stall the O/S via the serial console?

Are you now trying to login via the serial console?

Did you set a root password or did you leave it null?

Also, keep in mind that root login is disabled via SSH in a standard configuration. You have to change the ssh settings if you want to enable ssh connectivity for the root account.

So what console serial terminal are you using? Is it a PC based terminal emulator? If so, what? Is it set 9600,8,N,1?

Have you done or edited ANYTHING since the install routine was done?
e.g. edited /etc/passwd file?

Can you try to login with a normal user ( if created ) from console ? and then su - root.

Yes, but I asked the OP whether /etc/passwd had been changed in any way.

Messing up the format (eg, unprintable characters inserted) can cause this kind of thing. For example, just inserting a blank line at the beginning of the file will stuff all logins. Root user must be on the first line.

Still awaiting an answer to my post.
