StorageTek 2540 SAN array

Bought a Sun StorageTek 2540 SAN array a few years ago from a company that was going out of business. When we first set it up, we were able to get all the software (Common Array Manager) and firmware directly from Sun.

We just upgraded the drives, but the array is too large for the firmware. Now that Oracle's taken over, the latest firmware is no longer available.

Any suggestions or help?

What do you mean by "upgraded the drives"?

Assuming the array is still working, you have three options:

1. Keep using it as-is with no support and without upgrading it (assuming it's still working)
2. Pay for support from Oracle for your existing array so you can get access to updates.
3. Buy another disk array from another vendor.

I assume he meant he put in bigger drives and the box can't handle the bigger drives without a firmware upgrade that is no longer available or can't be found on the Oracle site.

I think the best thing to do is talk to someone at Oracle support and see what they say about getting the device to work with the new drives.

If he has no support contract, he can not talk to Oracle support! So all statements of achenle are correct.

Of course he has to pay for support first. That's a given. I'd sure hate to think that Oracle would give away free what I have to pay for.

Can you even get to a place where you can do a search for software on the Oracle support site without a contract? Everytime I try to do something like that, I have to log in first. So if I didn't have a contract, I wouldn't know if a piece of software was available or not, right?

you can create an account and don't link any contract information to this account. with that account you can login to support.oracle.com or any other download platform from oracle (like e-delivery) and try to download software... if it works, you will know which software is free.

Yes, we upgraded the array to all 600GB drives. The current firmware doesn't support using all 12 drives in single array. Furthermore, the current firmware has known performance issues.

When we first got the array, we were able to download all the software freely from Sun, including the CAM and firmware we have on there now. The latest firmware was also freely available on Sun's site prior to their acquisition and Oracle hasn't made any updates to the firmware that I'm aware of.

chilinski, to your point, lots of people were able get for free what Oracle is charging for now. An argument could be made that anyone who downloaded the firmware prior to the acquisition would have the license to install that firmware on any array.

Either way, I've called Oracle trying to buy a support contract, but they won't let me. From what I understand, without having an original receipt from Sun or an authorized Sun vendor, Oracle we simple cannot get a support contract for this Sun hardware. If anyone can tell me otherwise, I'm all ears.

I do have an Oracle support *account* that was migrated from the free Sun account, but I cannot access the firmware URL. I can only assume that's due to not having a support contract.

If I'd had any idea that Oracle would be like this, I would have stayed on top of the firmware and downloaded the later version prior to the buyout.

I just want a properly-working array.
