Which version of SSH is this

ssh -V
SSH Version Sun_SSH_1.0, protocol versions 1.5/2.0.

Looks like a Sun packaged ssh. Seems to be compatible with ssh protocol 2, but in my experience you can experience problems when the client and server ssh packages are from different vendors

huh, wouldnt that defeat the purpose of "protocol"
