how to get the root password or how to install Sun OS?

I just got a used sun ultra enterprise 450 and need to get a username and password. If I cannot get easily how do I reinstall the OS. What OS can I put on its? I am new to some equipment. It also came with a a storage unit for extra hard drives and how would I use it and set it up also?

It now says type ctrl-d. What do I do what do?

Sounds like a system I used to run.

The Sun E450 takes a LONG time to boot after a reconfigure. I remember it took me an 90 minutes between boots. Now, it could be the - between CD and ROM. A similar post to Google groups indicates there might have been a problem with a specific CD release.

What do you mean by this? You are taking over responsibility for this machine?

If you are not sure about the user name and password, what you can do is boot the system with cdrom in single user mod as below

Quote:
# boot cdrom –s
Once system is booted, mount the root file system to /a and edit the /a/etc/shadow file and remove the encrypted password which is there after root:----:, delete the second columns assuming that each is separated by ‘:’. Then umount the file system and reboot it again as normal. You will able to logging to system as root user .

Sorry I couldn’t see you last post

Can you check if cdrom is the alias given to CD drive? On OK prompt give devalias and check if you can get CD-ROM there

If you want recover root passwd, serial in to the serial port using your laptop hyperterm and break it to ok> prompt. boot cdrom -s to go single user, mount your raw disk to /mnt , edit the shadow file(remove encrypted passwd) and save it. reboot the system and you're in.

to install os, break to ok> prompt. type "boot cdrom" thats all
