You've got the right syntax with tput, but like mentioned before, your terminal has to support it.
I tried it on a few with mixed results. This command: echo "`tput blink`hightlighted`tput sgr0`" putty window: inverted colors (kinda) dtterm: inverted colors xterm: text bolded gnome terminal: nothing |
