Post parsing a string

hi
i am new to shelll scripting
I need to parse a string like "abc,def,ghie,jkl"
And assign them to some variables like
hs1 = abc
hs2 = def
hs3 = ghi
hs4 = jkl

Please help

This is not particularly newbie-friendly, but a common shell scripting idiom.

Code:
oldifs=IFS
IFS=,
set -- $variable
hs1=$1
hs2=$2
hs3=$3
hs4=$4
IFS=$oldifs

It's supposed to be in $variable in that example.
