Itanium was Intel's view of the future until AMD decided there was still mileage left in the Intel 4004 extended family.

HP decided that it was too expensive to continue developing their own PA-RISC CPUs and collaborated with Intel on a replacement, based on the x86 architecture. The resultant chip is the Itanium.
The entire current range of HP UNIX systems are based on Itanium, from the smaller single (dual-core ) CPU entry level systems up to the aforementioned Superdome.
