how to do this doggy shell script?

I stuck in the following shell script. I just manage to think of using the following command:
grep 'int.*' <*.cpp | cut -f2 -d" "

but no idea of continuing.

Any buddy, please give me a hint?

/**************************************************************************************
Write a shell script to show the number of lines on which each int variable
appears in a C++ program. Assume that all declarations start at the
beginning of a new line and are of the format:

int variable ;

The output should be of the format:

x number of appearances = 3
y number of appearances = 2
