Replacing pattern in variable

My String variable is holding value as - abc"def

I want to replce " with \"

I tried with awk :

echo $var | awk '{gsub(/"/,"\"");print}'

and I am getting an error, `)' is not expected.

echo 'abc"def' | sed 's/"/\\&/g'
