assigning a variable containing hostname

Hello..

Here is a small doubt....

I need to assign root@hostname to variable..
where hostname is the system variable...

when i give variable="root@$hostname"
its not working...

pls help..me

Are you trying to use root@<hostname of the machine> ??

If so then,
Code:
variable="root@$(hostname)"
echo $variable
it will work now.
