If you use ksh, you can use typeset
Code:
[/tmp]$ cat test.ksh
#! /bin/ksh

typeset -RZ2 val

val=1
echo $val
val=11
echo $val
[vivarkey@/tmp]$ ./test.ksh
01
11
[/tmp]$
