Using your solution to find the number of 'a' words:
Code:
awk 'BEGIN {RS="a" } END { print NR }' FILE

Gives total of '28' when the result is '4'.
Firstly the input data in this case is nonsensical, secondly the OP asked for the number of occurrences of a word in a file, not the number of occurrences where the word occurs only as a word, while I believe yours is the intended interpretation, without knowing the OPs intention, you cannot state for sure which is correct.

For the other case:
Code:
awk 'BEGIN{RS ="(^|[[:punct:]]|[[:space:]])word([[:punct:]]|[[:space:]]|$)" } END { print NR }' file

try this
count1=`wc -w inputfile`
count2=`sed s/word/" "/g inputfile |wc -w`

/*number of word =count1-count2*/

I don't think this works if the word is in the middle of a larger word.
Code:
$echo compoundwordinmiddle >inputfile
$count1=`wc -w inputfile`
$count2=`sed s/word/" "/g inputfile |wc -w`
$echo $count1
1 inputfile
$echo $count2
2

MySQL

Here is the command which you can use-

grep -o "string" filename | wc -w
