running NIS over ssh

Hi Guys,

Is it possible to run NIS over ssh as I want to run NIS without the security risks that would normally follow?

If you have got any suggestions please share them with me.

Well, it looks like it's not truly supported, but has been done. Check out the links on the SSH FAQ here:
http://www.employees.org/~satch/ssh/...q-5.html#ss5.5

Also, I'm not too familiar with NIS/NIS+, but would NIS+ be of any benefit?

(Note: our DNS is flakey right now, so I couldn't view any of the links in the FAQ. So I'm not sure if this is a viable option)

Thanks LivinFree,

I'll try the solution given on the link you provided.

I still don't understand why Sun or anyone else doesn't provide secure NIS and NFS, they are both useful services to have, securing them would make them even better.
