I see what you're saying.

Unfortunately, when I then use it for the "/" find, it comes back that the argument list is too long.

I think the best thing is to use

find -x / -ls | sort

to...

will do what I need as far as finding all files on a particular volume. Now I need to sort the results by the file's modification date/time.
