Well, without seeing your server it's not easy to diagnose. There should be a red LED on the motherboard that will at least tell you if it is receiving power from the PS. Does HP have a help desk?

Although it's not on the the poll, Mac users are familier with OS X's editor called TextEdit. If you open a shell in OS X, vim is the default editor.

I will always recommend FreeBSD as an easy Unix for beginners. I have had a lot of success with it. You will probably get a lot of sugesstions for xterm. That's pretty much the Unix standard terminal...
