5.0.2 - ifor_pmd core dumps

For those interested in what is actually failing under 5.0.2. It's the license manager (ifor_pmd) that is core dumping on startup when the system date is > Sep 2015. Then other processes (like streams / tcp that check the license) fail miserably because they can't contact the ifor_pmd process through the pipes setup in the /pmd directory. That then causes the fork failures and restricts access to just tty01 (console).

While OSS601A did fix some date issues (like brand) it did not fix ifor_pmd.

As was recommended in one of the first replies - if you set the date back and start the system it's fine - then change it forward after boot.

I had a customer with a very old system that ran into this. Upgrade in place was not an option because their system has only 32Mb of RAM - 5.0.5 or 5.0.6 will not boot / load in that amount of RAM, so upgrading them without starting to monkey with hardware was not an immediately available solution.

You can Transform The System to a virtual machine and then upgrade to 5.0.6

If upgrading from 5.0.2 to 5.0.6 is not possible, one way to guarantee that the system will be able to boot by forcing a "safe" date/time is to add the following line to the top of the /etc/inittab file:
Code:
date::sysinit:/bin/date -t 201508310101 </dev/null >/dev/console 2>&1

This will set the date/time to August 31, 2015 with time 01:01:00 no matter what the BIOS RTC clock was set to.

Once booted, log in as root and set the date/time to the correct value.

Note: In my testing, any attempt to set the date/time to the correct value during bootup (such as the normal method in the /etc/tcp init script and its starting of the xntpd daemon or use of ntpdate commands) will result in ifor_pmd crashing when you log in the first time and the system will only allow logins on tty01 console only. However, if you log in to the system as the root user manually after booting has finished and then set the date (via any method), ifor_pmd will not crash. It is acting as if there has to be a successful login (which causes mgetty to communicate with ifor_pmd to check license limits) once before the date can be modified without crashing ifor_pmd.

WOW. Changing the time actually did work!! I appreciate whoever found that. I'm not sure how you found it but would be interested in knowing.

I just tried it out. Changing the time is not the best solution, but the only one if you are not able to upgrade to 5.0.6

At the risk of posting to an older post... I have to say I am very glad to find this site and the posts from all of you. Add a customer of mine to the list of those who are still using 5.0.2 and having this exact issue. Currently, I'm making daily trips to them just to reset the date and get them working for that day. Only good news to this is that they are now serious about updating their software. sigh....
Having read this thread, I'm sending an email per the post 53 instructions.I'm not entirely sure that their software will work on 5.0.6 but I think it's worth trying. Thank you all for just being here!

Hallo all,
i got the download link from jgt for an update to version sco 5.0.6. I followed the instructions but the result is not a valid ISO Image. I can not mount the Image in an virtual cd drive of a VM. If i burn a CD, the CD is not readable. Has anybody the same problem, or can someone give me a hint?
best regards
wtue
