Warning and Panic errors

Ok my first post and its a good/bad one I'm sure I came into work and the server was locked up on the tape back up screen. My only option at that point was to restart the machine without shutting it down. I'm running an old server with unix and SCO openserver 5 I managed to find a 3.5 boot floppy but my 3.5 root floppy has a bad image error. When the machine attempted to reboot I received a warning and panic message as follows:

PANIC: srmountfun - Error 22 mounting rootdev hd 1/42
cannot dump 8095 pages to dumpdev hd 1/41 space for only 0 pages

warning wd0: Error on fixed disk dev 1/42 block=0, cmd=0x00000020, status=0x00005940, sector 173312, cylinder/head 677/0

Any help would be appreciated greatly.

The disk is failing. Do you have a recent backup? Since it is an IDE drive, it should be easy to replace. 1/42 is the root file system. Do you have a separate /u file system for data?
The more you try to read this drive, the more damage you are going to do to it.
What backup procedure are you using?

I do have back up tapes they are fairly new(think they were purchased about a month ago and we back up every night) as far as a u file I'll be 100% honest I don't know what that is. I know very little about sco/unix/linux the only thing I have is a Boot disk and a Root disk that has a bad image on it but I will gladly attempt anything suggested.

Can you post the procedure that you use to make the tape backup?
Do you have the original media and license information, and if so, what is the release information on the cd?

While your are finding that info, you should acquire another computer. P4 single core with 256-512mb ram and 40-80gb disk (must be ide not sata) and cd reader, in a standard case (so that if there is an interface card in the current system for the tape drive, it will fit in the new case (if there is such a card, and it is not pci we may have a problem.)
Also acquire an additional disk at least as large as the failing one.
Download Miray Software - HDClone - Hard disk copy, hard disk backup, hard disk rescue! and create the cd so that you can attempt to duplicate the failing disk.

We run a software system called C systems, the tape back up is run automatically when you run endday to close down for the day, I have no idea how anything was set up this system is like 15 years old and I kinda inherited fixing computers as a part of my job we use to have another guy that did it but he quit several years ago no idea how to get in touch with him. All I have in form of installation/repair/whatever are a 3.5 floppy boot and root disk with the root disk being bad, the company we bought the system from no longer supports our stuff due to age and when I call them all they say is its time to upgrade while I fully agree we are really a seasonal business spring/summer and dropping $4000 right now isn't a option unfortunately.

jgt's suggestion costs nowhere near $4000. You might even have a computer in the office somewhere which fits(or, more likely, greatly exceeds) the needed specs.

Price should be $85 to $120 for a used system, no keyboard, mouse or operating system. You can probably buy a second system for less than a new disk.
