Mac OS X 10.5, Boot Camp: Understanding how Apple localized keyboard character combin
The characters printed on a keyboard are regionally-specific; designed to be used in one or more cultural regions. Because there are many more characters in a localized language then can be printed on the keys of a keyboard, additional characters can be produced by holding down a combination of other keys.
