Boot Camp Assistant: "Your startup disk cannot be partitioned..."

When attempting to partition your Intel-based Mac's disk with Boot Camp Assistant you may receive the message: "Your startup disk cannot be partitioned because verification failed. Start up your Macintosh from a Mac OS X Install Disc and use Disk Utility to repair your startup disk..."
