You get the OS on a DVD when you purchase a Mac. Updates are free. Just use the system update function off the Apple menu.

Upgrades, on the other hand, are NOT free. Apple hasn't given away upgrades since version 6.x

Why are you asking? Did you screw up your Mac and can't find the install disk? If so, just go to your local Apple store and they can re-install it for free, usually while you wait.

MicroSoft, nor any PC manufacturer, provides Windows or Windows upgrades for free.

So why should Apple?

That was the rationalle behind Apple's decision to stop providing free upgrades to the OS. And that was when OS 7 came out (In the late 80's? Early 90's?).

I know. I was the President of the local Macintosh Users Group at the time.

---

So that leads me back to the my question: Why are you looking for it? Don't you have the original DVD that came with the computer?

well,

You can download darwin and run your own x windows of your choice, it is like the open source version of OS X, but nothing like the actual OS.
