Explain applications files (newcomer)

I just upacked a bz2 file and got the following:

Code:
Jebs-Mac-mini:OXED jeb$ tar xvjf 0xED.tar.bz2
x 0xED.app/
x 0xED.app/Contents/
x 0xED.app/Contents/_CodeSignature/
x 0xED.app/Contents/Info.plist
x 0xED.app/Contents/MacOS/

I assume the "x" means the files and directories were unpacked. These files don't appear in the OS X interface.

1. Where on my system are these files located and how can I see them with the Apple interface?

2. The 0xED.app file does show up but when I try to open it, nothing happens.

They are located in the same directory you unpacked them.

Your GUI does try to open them, albeit as an application. OSX bundles applications in folders to organize them.

Try looking around at its contents in your terminal.

Thank you Corona. I didn't realize that .app was a directory. Yes, it contains all of the unpacked files listed. Also, I can now open the app in my Mac interface. Appreciate the help.

It struck me as strange too, at first, but I can see the point. I'm glad they didn't use some bizarre compressed or mounted format that could only be understood with apple tools...
