vipw(8) System Manager's Manual vipw(8)Name
vipw - edit the password file
Syntax
vipw
Description
The command edits the password file while setting the appropriate locks and doing any necessary processing after the password file is
unlocked. If the password file is already being edited, then you will be told to try again later. The editor will be used unless the
environment variable EDITOR indicates an alternate editor. The command performs a number of consistency checks on the password entry for
root, and does not allow a password file with a corrupted root entry to be installed.
If the hashed database exists will automatically invoke on it to keep it synchronized with the file.

SYNOPSIS
/usr/ucb/vipw
DESCRIPTION
vipw edits the password file while setting the appropriate locks, and does any necessary processing after the password file is unlocked. If
the password file is already being edited, then you will be told to try again later. The vi(1) editor will be used unless the environment
variable VISUAL or EDITOR indicates an alternate editor.
vipw performs a number of consistency checks on the password entry for root, and will not allow a password file with a "mangled" root entry
to be installed. It also checks the /etc/shells file to verify the login shell for root.

Running into a bit of a problem on one of our HP-UX nodes.
I'm unable to add users through useradd.
We can edit the passwd file normally or through vipw, just fine. Once you remove the .pwd.lock file, though, vipw will not work.

did a big mistake, changing root entry of /etc/passwd to
root:x:0:0:root:/root:/usr/bin/tmux split-window -v \; attach
as expected, now I can't login as root anymore. sudo ed /etc/passwd etc. doesn't work.
Any idea?
