If then else help in shell script
I have an application that needs to be restarted periodically. At times, one of the processes will hang. I would like to automate this process.

Code:
# If the value returned here is a ?:
ps -ef  | grep  "ibiaud" | grep -v grep | tr -s " " | cut -d " " -f7
# then run this:
kill -9 `ps -ef|egrep -i "icssvr|ibiaud" |grep -v grep |awk '{print $2}'`
start.sh

I cannot figure out the syntax for the first command (if it equals ?).

Solution is not check exit code of the ps ...
because cut work always, if syntax is ok.
You need to compare output.

if [ "$str" != "" ] ; then
    kill -9 $(ps -ef|egrep -i "icssvr|ibiaud" |grep -v grep |awk '{print $2}')
fi
start.sh

When I run this script:

it returns:
./killscrp.sh: test: unknown operator | cut -d

Any ideas?

Looks like your cut-and-paste of frans' script didn't work out: you put in a line break in the middle of the if-statement, which makes both parts syntactically incorrect of course.

Sorry, bakunin. I am a novice at scripting and don't follow you. The line break I posted was just wrapping.

Here is the latest code:

if [ "$(ps -ef  | grep  "ibiaud" | grep -v grep | tr -s " " | cut -d " " -f7)" =  "?" ]; then 
	echo "not running" 
else
	echo "running"
fi

It returns: ./killscrp.sh: test: unknown operator | cut -d

Obviously, I am missing something here, I just can't figure out what it is. Thanks for any guidance.

I just discovered that this runs under Korn Shell (/usr/bin/ksh) find. It returns the error above when running BASH (/bin/sh). I need to run it using BASH shell. Thanks.

Sounds like the shell that you're using doesn't understand the $() command substitution syntax and is instead matching double-quotes intended for the command inside the substitution with double-quotes outside of it. Perhaps you can try replacing "$(....)" with "`....`"
