Linux kernel upgrade

Hi,

I am not able to upgrade the Linux kernel version 2.6.21.5 to 2.6.25. I tried applying the patches available in the Linux site. The patches are not getting applied successfully. I have the linux kernel 2.6.21.5 with some samsung patches on top of it. I want to upgrade that kernel to 2.6.25 with samsung things. Can anyone give me the exact steps to upgrade without deleting the samsung related files. Please help me with the steps of kernel upgrade.

Thanks,
Pooja

Why are you doing it manually? What distribution of Linux are you using here?

My guess is you would be better off performing a standard upgrade of the kernel and then reapplying any vendor-specific drivers/patches you require. Otherwise... just don't upgrade.

Incidentally, "upgradation" is not a word.

Yes I tried that as well. But its not working. I have a board with linux kernel 2.6.21.5 with samsung stuffs on it. I have to upgrade that board to 2.6.25. What did you mean by the standard steps to upgrade a kernel? What are those steps?

It depends what version of Linux you are running. Usually it involves installing an updated kernel RPM. Let us know the exact Linux distribution you are using and someone should be able to advise you.

What do you mean by "a board"?

What do you mean by "Samsung stuffs"? Do you have a specific Samsung device in your system that requires special kernel drivers? If so, what sort is it? Does it not have documentation telling you how to install or reinstall it after kernel upgrades?

Hi,

What I meant by board is I have a smdk6400 board. The board has the linux kernel 2.6.21.5 with the samsung drivers in it. Now I want to upgrade the kernel to 2.6.25 with these drivers working. This board doesn't have any documentation on kernel installation. Hope this will make you clear.

Thanks
Pooja

Hmm... I think you're heading into risky territory there, upgrading a kernel on an embedded device of some sort?

If you're lucky you might get away with getting an entire copy of the newer kernel and copying the smdk6400-specific subdirectories into the new kernel tree... however I don't fancy your chances. Personally I'd wait for a new release of the kernel from the original developers/suppliers for your device.

Either way you'd really want to know what you were doing before attempting this or your device may become unusable!
